using astronomy eyepieces with the DIASCOPE 85 FL

Anybody have experience using the DIASCOPE 85 FL with astrononomy eyepieces? I have four excellent Nikon Orthoscopic 1 1/4 inch  astronomy eyepieces of various focal lengths.. If used with the Diascope 85 FL, can I expect full performance and will the image be inverted for terrestrial use?

    Hi,

Easy part first...no the image will not be inverted.

After that it depends on what you mean by "full performance". With the proper adaptor they might or might not focus to infinity...it depends on the eyepiece design. Then too, astronomical eyepieces are optimized for images at infinity...terrestrial eyepieces are optimized for images at somewhat less than that.

That said, you should get very satisfying performance out of you Nikons...but I would be surprised if they will outperform our standard eyepieces on terrestrial subjects.

    Hi!

Maybe I have misunderstood, but I think I have read somewhere, that the length of the barrel on the astro eyepiece is important too. Too long barrel will touch inner parts of the scope. If I am right, do you know how long this barrel can be? I presume that both Baader and Zeiss adapters have the same depth. I need an eyepiece with about 20x and 60m/1000m FOV. I'm looking for an astro eyepiece that can achieve my needs, as Zeiss have answered me that they will not produce soething like this.

    Best regards! Pagophila

    Hi!

I've just got an answer from Baader Planetarium on this: the sleeve/barrel can be maximum 0,94", (i.e. 23,876 mm). I suppose that this will be the same when using Zeiss astro adapter. Please correct me if this is wrong!
