Space Coast Birding and
Nature Festival 2008
Every
year the Space Coast Birding and Nature Festival gets bigger and
better. Bigger in the more attendees sense. Better in the better field
trips, better workshops, better organizaion sense.
This year
once again demonstrated the wisdom of the move to January. The birds at
Merritt Island NWR were the best I've seen in years. Though there was
much more water along Blackpoint Wildlife Drive than at this time last
year, the birds were still in-close and cooperative.
Spoonbills
were just coming into full breeding plumage. The Great Egrets, on the
final day, were even begining their territorial and mating rituals.
The
new observation decks and the briding trail along Blackpoint proved
productive on every visit, allowing close enounters with feeding
Tricolored Herons, Wood Storks, and Reddish Egrets. Hooded Mergansers
were present in numbers in the ponds beyond the last observation deck.
The
weather was great for photography. High sun. Clear cool air. (So cool I
resorted to winter hat and gloves on more than one morning.)
If
you haven't added Space Coast to your wish list for festivals, this is
the time to do it. It will only get better. And what could make it
better than you're being there?
